I may have given yesterday’s position incorrectly (the chart plotter cursor position, not the boat – whoops!)

So sailing through fog through the night… it’s interesting. Just before sunset last night, the fog started closing in on us and the wind picked up at the same time (of course). We reefed both sails and were still comfortably sailing at 6.5/7 knots. The fog enveloped us and the moisture in the air created so much condensation on the enclosure windows that we couldn’t even see Kaiquest’s bow in the darkness.

Because of the constant rolling and lack of any horizon, I couldn’t look forward without feeling green. Another reason I enjoy not having a completely full enclosure (back is open) – I like us to see the waves and swell approaching us and feel wind on my face. Funny, on Hydroquest it was the same. All night long, I focus my gaze on waves behind us. I like to know what’s coming!

We scooted along through the night with a bright trail of phosphorescence in our wake. We closely monitored AIS and radar and saw about 10 targets, one of which we had to divert course for (a stationary research vessel).

This morning the wind died down so we have been motor sailing since 9am. We’ve past the Columbia river entrance and are now approx 40nm west of Cannon Beach, Oregon. There’s minimal wind chop and decent westerly swell.

Sighings for the day: Will has seen a whale, a pod of jumping dolphins, and a sunfish. I have seen only kelp and birds.
