Woohoo, Hydroquest is back where she belongs - in the water. It's great to see old friends on the docks (we're currently at Marina de La Paz). Stephanie, from SV Le Letty, offered to give us an aerial fabric lesson yesterday morning. It was a lot of fun!

Black and Blue (paint)
The sky was filled with menacing clouds, the wind was hurdling over the fence and racing around the boat stands, and the rain was coming down in sheets – conditions a result of nearby Hurricane Paul. Was it the perfect time to wet sand the bottom of the boat? Wet sanding last season’s paint off the bottom is … Continue reading Black and Blue (paint)
Rain Rain Rain… Hurricane?
We left Vancouver in the rain, and we arrived in La Paz in the rain. It was a funny feeling eating tacos in the middle of a downpour last night! The great news is that Hydroquest was in FABULOUS shape when we went to the boatyard this afternoon. Batteries are fully charged (we left a … Continue reading Rain Rain Rain… Hurricane?
Summer Stages away from Cruising
Being home in Vancouver for the summer was an amazing reality-check. Our first four months of cruising were surprisingly very busy and stressful compared with our previous ‘normal’ lives (or maybe not so surprising when we consider the new boat, lack of experience on my part, and consistent Hydrovane workload). It was nice to come home to relax and re-group. When … Continue reading Summer Stages away from Cruising
Salish Sea vs Sea of Cortez
We've been land-lubbers in Vancouver since mid-June and, although it's been great visiting with family and friends, we've been missing HYDROQUEST and our life aquatic - big time. We were lucky enough to be able to spend 10 days back on the water on a family friend's boat, S/V Seaquill. She is a 2004 Catalina 310, … Continue reading Salish Sea vs Sea of Cortez
Putting the Boat to Bed
Our first season of cruising is sadly coming to an end. We are putting HYDROQUEST to bed for the summer (and hurricane season). We are scheduled to haul out at Marina Fonatur in La Paz on Tuesday. We have a long to-do list but have been working hard and are getting things done. More details later...
Glorious Days
We’ve been living onboard for four and a half months, but it’s only just in this past week that I feel we are finally in full cruising mode. We broke away from the lure of the city and we have beeen blissfully enjoying sailing through the world’s largest aquarium - just the two of us, the rays and the whales. The … Continue reading Glorious Days
Heading north
The engine is purring away, running at a perfect 180 degrees with no leaks (woohoo!!!). We're heading north. The sails are going up as soon as we loose this connection. First stop (hopefully before dark) is Isla San Francisco. Then maybe Agua Verde. We will be offline for a few days.... (woohoo!!!)
Nose to the grindstone
It's not all fun and games. We've just spent three long, hot, sweaty days with heads in the engine, battery compartment, or bilge. No more sunshine and margaritas - just tools, hoses, wires, parts, clamps, connections, coolant, and a fair amount of cussing. I am constantly amazed by my husband's (inate?) knowledge of how to install, maintain, and fix these things … Continue reading Nose to the grindstone
Sisters and sea lions
My sister Emily and her boyfriend Craig left for the La Paz airport at 4am on Saturday morning after a brief but exciting trip that included: being shark bait, hiking up a desert mountain (but never reaching the top), sleeping through the windiest and rolliest nights we’ve had at anchor yet, swimming with sea lions at Los … Continue reading Sisters and sea lions
